JOB SUMMARY

Oversee the Animal Resource Center operations, budget and staff, to provide animal research services to support Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), faculty, students and staff to assure compliance with applicable laws and regulations concerning the use of animals in instructional and research activities. Provide administration of programs at all sites covered under the Sanford Public Health Services (PHS) assurance. Function as a resource for employees and investigators in the use of animal models. Provide guidance and expertise in facility design and construction for future expansion of the research lab. Work with other stakeholders in the animal care and use program to maintain institutional accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International. Participate in regulatory programs and committees, including but not limited to Institutional Biosafety Committee, IACUC and Radiation Safety Committee as needed. Work with administration, faculty and staff to formulate policies, procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs) that comply with all federal, state and local regulations and meet research investigator needs. Oversee training programs to teach techniques and procedures of modern animal care and technology. Work with employed or contractual veterinarians to provide clinical care and ensure fulfillment of the veterinary care program objectives. Invoice internal investigators and external clients, ordering and inventory control, prepare financial reports, maintain database records to assure compliance with regulatory agencies. Seek extramural funding to enhance program resources. Demonstrate the ability to utilize software applications for maximum efficiency. Occasional local travel between sites may be required.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Champions staff development programs and initiatives in general. Develops and manages initiatives for creating an environment that values customer service. Promotes knowledge transfer of best practices in resource management and a culture of resource-consciousness. Uses internal and external network of leaderships or experts to help achieve organizational and client goals. Plays a leading role in promoting HSE policy compliance best practices across the industry. Develops or deploys an easy-to-use record management system for various applications. Ensures proper protection of organization's confidential information. Shifts focus among several efforts as required by changing priorities. Communicates well downward, upward, and outward. Creates mechanisms for regular process reviews and continuous process improvement. Creates realistic and attainable program of professional development for self. Leads in developing, implementing and enforcing policies, procedures and performance standards. Plays a leading role in promoting HSE policy compliance best practices across the industry.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be DVM or hold a Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist (RLATG) or a Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) certification through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the time of hire, and must maintain the certification(s) throughout employment. Bachelor's degree required in a science or related field plus 10 years of laboratory animal research experience, Masters degree with 8 years of laboratory animal research experience or DVM with 5 years of laboratory animal research experience or an equivalent combination of education and animal husbandry experience required.
